Flocking & Food / Predator–Prey —
Getting started
Mint triangles are prey, salmon diamonds are predators, and yellow dots are edible food. Watch foraging flocks and hunting predators, and compare their populations on the graph’s shared vertical scale.
Ecosystem starts with 120 prey and 8 predators; Foraging only with 120 and 0; Scarce food with 120 and 12. Food regrowth is 18 seconds normally or 45 seconds in the scarce scenario.
Click or drag to replenish food or introduce animals.
Pause, step or change playback speed. On mobile, open settings with ⚙.
Parameters apply immediately. Restart uses the current parameters and seed; changing scenario resets initial populations and regrowth time.
Flocking, foraging and escape
Prey combine separation, alignment and cohesion with food seeking and predator avoidance. Predators pursue nearby prey and capture them at close range. The world wraps at its edges, including perception across the boundary.
Flocking strength adjusts alignment and cohesion; short-range separation remains active.
Energy and reproduction
E_parent ← E_parent / 2
E_child ← E_parent
Prey and predators spend energy continuously and regain it by feeding. Eligible, sufficiently energetic animals reproduce probabilistically, sharing their energy equally with offspring. Reproduction also has age and cooldown requirements; reaching zero energy causes death.
Prey birth rate is adjustable; predator birth rate is 0.035 per second. Coexistence and population cycles are not guaranteed. Extinction is possible, and animals never respawn automatically.
What this model represents
This educational agent model combines Boids-style movement with energy-based feeding, reproduction and death. It is not a numerical solution of the Lotka–Volterra equations or a forecast of a real ecosystem. Spatial interactions affect the outcome.
Reproducibility and limits
The model uses a fixed 1/30-second timestep and seeded randomness. Caps of 360 prey and 60 predators prevent further additions and births for that species; 450 food locations regrow in place. History retains up to 180 simulated seconds. Slow devices may run below the requested speed.
