Grey Walter and the tortoises
ウォルターは、これを「Machina speculatrix(探索する機械)」と呼びました。
William Grey Walter (1910–1977) was a neurophysiologist at the Burden Neurological Institute in Bristol, England. Around 1948–49 he built two small robots, Elmer and Elsie. Each had a rounded, tortoise-like shell, a light sensor, a touch sensor, two motors (one for driving and one for steering), a battery, and a circuit built from just a couple of small vacuum tubes. Walter called this kind of machine Machina speculatrix, the "speculative" or exploring machine. The names ELMER and ELSIE are said to be acronyms built from "electro-mechanical robot."
その成果は、1950年にScientific American誌の記事「An Imitation of Life(生命の模倣)」で紹介され、1953年の著書『The Living Brain』でも広く知られるようになりました。
Walter suspected that the brain's complexity comes less from the number of cells than from the richness of their connections, and he set out to test whether even a handful of components could produce complex-looking behavior. The work was presented in a 1950 Scientific American article, "An Imitation of Life," and became widely known through his 1953 book The Living Brain.
The tortoise's rules
The tortoise in this collection follows the rules below. The light sensor has a narrow field of view and turns together with the drive wheel.
| 光センサーが見る光 / What the sensor sees | 動き / Behavior | 状態 / State |
|---|---|---|
Keeps turning the steering and creeps forward, wandering as it searches.
Heads for the light at full speed. Approaching |
Turns the steering again and moves away from the light. Avoiding glare |
Backs up a little and turns. Bump |
Stops minding glare and goes into the bright hutch.
From just these rules you can see an animal-like sequence of behavior: "likes light but dislikes getting too close," "avoids what it bumps into," and "goes to its food (the hutch) when hungry." And each rule depends only on the light currently seen and on whether something has been touched. There is no map, no memory and no understanding of any goal.
Battery and hutch
When its battery runs low, Walter's tortoise begins to approach the hutch light that it used to avoid as too bright. The hutch has charging contacts, and entering it restores the battery. Once the battery is full, the hutch light becomes "too bright" again, so the tortoise leaves and resumes exploring. This collection reproduces it by raising the glare threshold as the battery drains. Neither entering nor leaving the hutch is a "decision": the battery level simply changes how the sensor responds.
Two tortoises
In the "Elmer and Elsie" scenario two tortoises move around. With the "Headlamp" option on, a tortoise that is scanning lights a small lamp on its head, which the other tortoise may pick up as a light. Walter also recorded a tortoise "dancing" as it reacted to its own lamp reflected in a mirror (the "mirror dance"). Unexpected interactions between the tortoises appear without adding any new rules.
Two approach styles
In the Walter style, the steering stops as soon as the light enters the field of view and the tortoise drives on. Because the body turns, the light soon leaves the view and scanning starts again. By repeating this, the tortoise approaches the light in a zigzag, along a wavy, scalloped path. In an arena of this size, though, it can take a while to reach the light.
In the "keep the light centered" style, the steering keeps aiming at the light even after it has entered the view, and the tortoise heads nearly straight for it. Comparing the two shows how far simple rules alone can take a robot toward a goal.
Experiments to try
In "Exploring in the dark," look at the shape of the trail. What path comes from simply turning the steering?
In "A lamp and rocks," lower the glare threshold. How far from the lamp does the tortoise end up circling?
Put a rock between the lamp and the tortoise. How does the behavior change when the rock blocks the light?
In "Battery and hutch," increase the battery drain. Can the tortoise still find the hutch?
Make the field of view narrower or wider. How does the efficiency of the search change?
Later influence
Walter's tortoises are an early demonstration, in a real machine, that simple reactions can combine into behavior that looks complex. In the 1980s Valentino Braitenberg's Vehicles described thought-experiment vehicles in which sensors are wired directly to motors, and Rodney Brooks proposed the "subsumption architecture," in which behavior is built from layered reactions rather than a complex internal map. Both share ideas with Walter's tortoises. This page does not claim that either was directly influenced by Walter.
What is simplified
The vacuum-tube circuits are not reproduced. The sensor value depends only on distance to the light and whether it is inside the field of view.
The values for brightness, thresholds and speeds are not those of Walter's machines; they are this collection's own, chosen for clarity.
Rocks block light, and touching a rock triggers the bump behavior. Walls do too.
Some variation is added to the motion, so the same scenario plays out slightly differently each time.
