Wireworld /
Getting started
The circuit garden starts with many loops and moving signals. Slow it down or step through each update. With reduced motion enabled, press Play to start.
Select Draw wire and drag to lay a path.
Choose Inject electron and a direction, then tap a wire to place a head and a tail behind it.
Press Play, then try cutting or joining paths.
Editing pauses playback. Injection needs two wire cells: one for the head and one behind it for the tail. Paint head/tail edits states directly; an isolated head can send signals in multiple directions.
Presets
Independent loops of different lengths and directions; connect them to experiment.
Follow a single circulating signal.
A loop feeds signals into branching wires.
Opposing signals meet and die out; reset to repeat.
An empty board for your own circuits.
Four states, four rules
Brian Silverman
Wireworld, introduced by Brian Silverman in 1987, updates every cell synchronously using its state and eight surrounding neighbors.
Stays empty.
Becomes a tail.
Becomes a conductor.
Becomes a head with exactly one or two neighboring heads; otherwise stays a conductor.
Diagonal cells count as neighbors. Leave space between independent wires. Suitable layouts can implement logic gates; this is a cellular automaton, not a voltage/current simulator.
Controls
Drag to pan, wheel or slider to zoom, Fit to frame all wires.
Undo restores up to 20 saved states from before edits, playback and other actions.
Clear signals converts all heads and tails into wire.
Advance 100 updates and pause; Reset cancels fast-forward.
Reset restores the selected preset.
Save the full board as a 640 × 640 PNG; glow is a display-only effect.
Use ⚙ for settings on mobile. The 160 × 160 grid has empty space outside, without wrapping. Normal playback pauses in hidden tabs. Actual speed depends on your device. Glow is omitted above 500 heads to keep rendering responsive.
